Anal Fistula

An anal fistula is an abnormal channel that is formed from within your back passage (anus) to the skin around the back passgae/buttocks. It is often caused by an infection near your back passage that causes an abscess (a collection of pus) in the akin around the back passage causing pain and sometimes fevers. Should the abscess burst  the pus drains out, and can leave a small channel (a fistula) behind like a small tunnel through the skin. An anal fistula may also be associated with certain chronic bowel conditions, such as Crohn's disease (an inflammatory bowel disease).

Signs and Symptoms of an Anal Fistula

Anal fistulas are often very symptomatic and cause a number of unpleasant symptoms and signs.
These include:-

• An unpleasant discharge from the skin around the anus
• Skin discomfort and irritation
• Throbbing anal pain on moving, sitting, straining at stool or coughing
• Blood or pus passed with the stools
• Recurrent flare ups of abscess formation and discharge and sometimes fevers

​There may be a nodule or hole on the skin around the back passage which the patient can feel.
