Diagnostic Radiology Services
Diagnostic Radiology
Diagnostic radiology services deliver a number of investigations or tests which are used to answer specific questions about the structure and function of your body. These tests are requested by your GP or consultant to investigate symptoms that you are experiencing and the aim is to provide an accurate diagnosis, or to guide the treatment of your condition. These services are available in both the private sector and in the NHS. Please see the links to specific tests for further information.
Advanced radiology techniquesAdvanced radiology techniques include advanced scans such as CT (Computed tomography) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Use either x-rays or a strong magnetic field and powerful detectors and computers to analyse the signals from the body.
In this way the body can be examined in cross-section in incredible detail and allows analysis of the internal organs and structures. |
Ultrasound InvestigationsUltrasound investigations use high frequency sound to examine internal body structures and inspect for abnormalities and defects. These scans are used to look at structures in the abdomen and pelvis (abdominal ultrasound), or can be used in the anal canal or rectum to examine the anal sphincter muscles or the bowel wall (endoanal and endorectal ultrasound scans).

Basic radiology techniquesThese investigations use ordinary X-ray techniques to examine various parts of the body. These procedures include tests such as plain x-rays of the abdomen and chest, together with other techniques which use contrast or labelled shapes to assess body functions more accurately such as Colonic Transit Studies, Barium Enema and Proctography.
